Still bull-shiting your way through art class

Sun Sep 7, 2008, 10:01 PM
When I moved from the small city of Eugene to the bigger city of portland to attend the Art Institute of Portland, I knew I would learn "Art" not that crap that they teach in high school. That measly art class that you realize that you can easily turn in a blank sheet of paper or canvas, call it a window to your emotionally damaged soul, call it a day and still get an A. However, while it is true that my instructors do not just kick the high school art teacher's ass, but the community collage teacher's as well. I do not mean any disrespect towards those who work, or, attend community collage, but for what my parents are paying for this collage, they should not only be able to kick their ass, but punt those asses all the way down the foot ball field and score a bloody touchdown! But still, when you are required to belt out about five projects every week for variouse classes, that are the equivelent to a final project in high school. You will find there are times, like this project I just put up, when it is not so much you using skills that theses teachers "teach" you, but coming up with whatever you damn well please, and then finding reasons why it fits the criteria later. So it is not a blank paper that is a window to my soul, but more like a blank paper that i have convinced my teachers, through the required essay and critiques, has something on it. However, than there are times that I am so exahsted with faking enthusiasim, going through the effort of looking up stuff so that I do know actaully take something form this school other than a pretty piece of paper. That some things fall through the cracks, in terms of quality and sanity. such as this discussion paper i came up with at last minute, I am pretty sure my teacher no wants me committed or something.

When constructing this rhythm composition, I first chose a song, which was the band Up’s Beautiful Day, and listened to it repeatedly. After listening to it for a while I tried a variety of methods to be able to make a non-moving composition for a song (as it is impossible to draw every part of four minute song) not look like jumped mess while still conveying the feeling of the entire song. My first method was to capture a thirty second clip of the song; however after listening to it reputedly I began having psychotic thoughts and went back to the drawing board. I eventually came to the conclusion to focus on three specific parts of the song and parts repeated over and over, such as the bass and piano that continuously play almost the exact same notes through out the song. The specific parts I chose were the beginning the middle and the end, and I took something each of those parts that stood out the most to me. The beginning was the bass with the subtle note changes, the middle was the wavering sound of unknown origin and the end was the burst of guitars, drums and other instruments that exploded like a piñata filled with mentors and coke cola. My overall emotional state as I did this project was controlled mainly by the music, as I am one of those people whose emotions can be heavily influenced by whatever music is playing in the background. So, like the song, I felt epic, like I was running through a field at full speed and jumped straight off a cliff. this is not to say that this song gave me suicidal thoughts or disbeliefs that I had the ability to fly, in my mind I imagined SAFELY jumping from the trees in the forest below the cliff and landing, again SAFELY, on the ground below.
